Pisa, in the heart of Tuscany, is a very lively and beautiful city with an ancient history which has much to offer. The Romanesque monuments of Piazza dei Miracoli, namely, the world-famous Leaning Tower, the Cathedral, the Baptistery and the Camposanto Monumentale, undoubtedly represent the symbols of the town and are a prime example of Medieval Italian art. Piazza dei Cavalieri, once the seat of power in the city and later the headquarters of the Knights of St. Stephen, is home to the prestigious Scuola Normale di Pisa, whose library is now located in Palazzo dell’Orologio, also mentioned by Dante Alighieri in his Divina Commedia. Among other places worthy of note is the Museum of S. Matteo, wich exhibits some important paintings and sculpture from the twelfth to the fifteenth century; other art collections are to be found in the Museum of Palazzo Reale and in the aptly named Palazzo Blu (owned by a private foundation).

Pisa was the birthplace of Galileo Galilei. Nowadays, the University of Pisa, the Scuola Normale Superiore, the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna and the CNR (National Research Centre) are four of the most important research institutions in Italy and have also gained international prestige.
